Functional Medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual.

The medical perspective of diagnosis is typically based on blood tests and if results return in the normal range, then everyone is considered normal, regardless of your symptoms. If you continue to experience symptoms but a diagnosis is not readily identified then there are often two paths that are taken. If you are frustrated with a lack of diagnosis and anxious about your health, you often end up on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications, or may even find yourself seeing a psychologist. The alternative is to wait until you have progressed to a state of disease that is identifiable diagnostically.

The other extreme is the “natural approach” where you might undergo a battery of tests before you are even evaluated and then you are given two bags of supplements to treat each test result or symptom without really evaluating why you have them. This system although deemed a natural approach, is only treating each system’s symptom, not the root cause and is a time consuming financial endeavor that can go on for years supporting your dysfunctional systems.

Functional Health Coaching takes a Functional Medicine approach which consists of an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers you and your practitioner to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of your health history,  biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that information to create a personalized treatment plans that leads to improved health and well-being. Not a masking of your symptoms, or supporting of your dysfunctions but creating real change in the function of your various body systems.

The precise manifestation of each cause depends on the individual’s genes, environment, lifestyle, and immune responses to past pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, yeast, mold, and other toxins. Only treatments that address the right cause will have lasting benefit beyond symptom suppression. By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, the complexity of disease is identified. One condition may have many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a resut, Functional Health targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual. Functional Health is a systems, biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root                                                                                                                                                   cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may                                                                                                                                                   be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.
